If you are planning on converting a barn into a home – take a look at this award winning Barn Conversion in Carmarthenshire.

Mr East used attic trusses supplied by Fforest Timber Engineering to create a beautiful room in the roof for his barn conversion in Swiss Valley, Llanelli.  The land and property was bought with planning permission and Mr East, a chartered civil and structural engineer solved any issues that arose during the conversion with the support of the local area Building Control Officer.  The project started in January 2010 (in the snow!) and although not quite finished Mr and Mrs East moved into the property in October 2010.  The Barn has since won the award for 'Best Barn Conversion in Carmarthenshire in  2011 ’ and was 'Highly  Recommended' in the subsequent regional final.

As you can see from the photographs this particular barn was a single storey building but with the use of ‘stub-end’ attic trusses designed and supplied by Fforest Timber Engineering Ltd, the additional storey was added without having to build up the external walls to a full two storey height.  By using stub-end attic trusses, the extra room width in the new upstairs space was maximised and a maximum sized room width and the standard domestic room height was achieved.  The external walls could then be built up to the overhangs of the stub-end attic trusses using stone to match the existing barn. 

Fforest Timber Engineering Ltd has designed and provided different types of roof trusses for these types of barn conversions; including  raised tie (raised collar) roof trusses where ceiling height is important or is a feature over a part of the building, straightforward attic trusses where the barn is wider and a full span truss is more suitable, scissor trusses can also be used over areas where there is no usable room above but some additional ceiling height can give that bit of extra space and a feature ceiling in the room they are used over.
